Of all the islands in Phang Nga, there is only one island whose rank is elevated to be a district that is Koh Yao. Koh Yai actually comprises two islands, Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi. Simiar to all the islands surrounded, they both own truly wonderful nature, but what adds more specialty to the two islands is the world-wide famous homestay community at Koh Yao Noi.

Location: The south of Phang Nga Bay, around 42 kilometers away from Phang Nga town, and around 20 kilometers away from Phang Nga town, and around 20 kilometers eastward of Phuket

To get there: Tourists could come to Koh Yao Noi both from Phang Nga Town, at Na Dan Port. There is motorboat to the island at 01.00 pm. From Phuket, there are boats from Bang Rong Port to Koh Yao Noi 5 times a day whereas from Krabi town, the boat to the island leaves at 11.00 am and 01.00 pm from Ta Len Port. The journey takes around 15-20 minuts.

The history of Koh Yao Noi started since 1785, in the era of King Rama I. At that time, there was a war between Thai and Myanmar and the people in Trang and Sutun provinces were afraid of the war infliction. So they emigrated to Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi, and settled down on these islands until today. After that, population on Koh Yao began to increase, so those in January 1, 1988, the two islands were collectively elevated to be a sub-district of Phang Nga.

Most people on Koh Yao Noi are Islamists, who make a living with agricultural occupations like fishing, or rice, rubber tree and coconut tree farming.

Also, from Koh Yao Noi you can get to the islands surrounded very conveniently. Most tourists, after thoroughly explored the island, will continue to Koh Lao Bi Le or Koh Hong, which is the location of a ranger unit of Than Bokkoranee National Park. For those who want to see wonderful snady beaches and coral reefs, do not miss visiting Koh Lao Hundu and Koh Pak Bia.

You can get to the island by boarding passenger boat to Ma Noh Port, which is the prot that links the two islands together. Around this prot there are buses and motorcycles ready to take you to every part of the island. The road on Koh Yao Noi si a well paved concrete road, with an exception of the eastern area which is partly dirt road. Moreover, Koh Yao Noi is also the location of Koh Yao District Administrative Office, police station, post office, and hospital. Although it is just an island, there are enough facilities at Koh Yao Noi, for at least you can find 7-eleven convenient store here.

Koh Yao Noi community is a good example of homestay program that local people could very well coordinate and organize its tourist resources by themselves, with total awareness for natural environment.

Haad Pa Sai is one of the most fantastic beaches at Koh Yao Noi. Located in the east, it is also a good spot for watching sunrise. Here you can find various kinds of accommodations; resorts, bungalows, and homestay lodging houses.

Most of the beaches of Koh Yao Noi are located in the west. If you come from Manoh Port, pass the District Administrative Office for around 7 kilometers, you will find Haad Pa Sai, which is a 400-meter-long beach. From here you can watch the scenery of Koh Pak Bai, Koh Hong and sunrise very well. To the north of Haad Pa Sai is Haad Klong Chak and Haad Tha Khao. The two partly stony beaches where canoeing is an interesting activity. There is another wonderful beach called Ao Kian located in the north of the island. The curved beach is around 50 meters long, with clear blue water very nice for swimming. There is a very large papal (Ficus Religiosa) and two caves to visit around this beach. However, please note that Ao Kian is accessible by boat only.

Here tourists could still see the simple lifestyles of Koh Yao Noi islanders, like rice farming or fishing. The south is the center of sea animal farming, so you can fetch some fresh snapper or lobster for dinner here, whereas the western road in the evening will become a healthy road where local people come to jog and play sports
